We at IDLF are saddened to hear of the passing of former Taoiseach (Irish Prime Minister) John Bruton.
Mr. Bruton was appointed to the Board of the IDLF in 2015 and was as inspiring in business as he was in politics. We were very fortunate to benefit from his extensive knowledge, experience and guidance.
As Taoiseach from 1994 - 1997, Mr. Bruton helped transform the Irish economy, which grew at an annual average rate of 8.7% during this tenure, peaking at 11.1% in 1997, when it was firmly in what is known as the ´Celtic Tiger´ era.
Mr. Bruton also served as EU Ambassador in Washington from 2004 to 2009, meeting with the President and former Presidents of the United States, as well as countless visits with governors, majors, business leaders, and students in most US states to promote the relationship and strengthen links between the EU and the US.
After retiring from political life, Mr Bruton turned his enormous talent and skill to promoting Ireland and our international relationship, through his membership of the Board of IDLF. We are forever grateful for the wisdom and expertise he brought to this work. His contributions to the development and direction of the IDLF were immeasurable.
A man of the highest integrity, he will be sorely missed. We send our heartfelt condolences to John's wife Finola and to his family and friends.
